The Washington Capitals announced Sunday that they have signed defenseman Cole Hutson to a three-year, entry-level contract.
The 19-year-old blueliner joins the professional ranks immediately following the conclusion of his sophomore season at Boston University, where the Terriers were eliminated in the Hockey East quarterfinals on Saturday night.

Hutson, a second-round pick (43rd overall) in 2024, leaves the NCAA as one of the most productive offensive defensemen in recent history. Over two seasons at BU, he recorded 80 points (24G, 56A) in 74 gamesβthe most by any NCAA defenseman over that span. As a sophomore, he led the Terriers in assists (22) and points (32) and was named a Hockey East First Team All-Star for the second consecutive year.
The North Barrington, Ill. native is the third brother from the Hutson family to enter the NHL ranks, joining Montreal Canadiens star, and reigning Calder Trophy winner, Lane, and Edmonton Oilers forward Quinn to make it to the big time.
Capitals GM Chris Patrick noted that the team intentionally kept a roster spot open following the trade of John Carlson to Anaheim earlier this month specifically to facilitate Hutson's transition to the NHL level.
