For the 2027-28 NHL season, the league is leaning heavily into hometown connections. The Edmonton Oilers will travel to Cologne to play two regular-season games at Lanxess Arena, serving as a massive homecoming for native son and Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl.
Similarly, the Boston Bruins will head to Munich to play a pair of games at SAP Garden. The trip is a perfect fit for a Boston organization that has built a strong German contingent. The Bruins are now led by Marco Sturm and feature Munich native J.J. Peterka alongside fellow German forward Lukas Reichel.
The 2027 slate will build on the NHL's upcoming footprint in the country, as the Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks are already scheduled to play in Düsseldorf this December for the 2026 Global Series.
The collaboration is expected to feature heavy involvement from cross-sport ambassadors, including Bayern Munich's Canadian star Alphonso Davies, who will help spearhead the storytelling initiatives and community engagement. By aligning with one of the most recognizable and successful football clubs in the world, the NHL is positioning itself for sustained, long-term growth across Germany and the broader European sports landscape.
