The Florida Panthers may have to begin their redemption campaign without one of their key veteran leaders. Forward Brad Marchand announced that he recently underwent surgery for a lingering lower-body injury, a procedure that puts his availability for the start of the 2026-27 season in serious doubt.

The 38-year-old revealed the news over the weekend in a social media video explaining his upcoming absence from “Zee’s Final Shift,” a farewell charity game for former Boston Bruins teammate Zdeno Chara scheduled for August 21 in Slovakia.

“Unfortunately I had to have surgery,” Marchand said. “I was trying to fix without surgery but unfortunately that wasn’t able to happen and had to kind of do it last minute. With the time and the recovery I’m going to need I won’t be able to make it and play in the game.”

According to George Richards of Florida Hockey Now, the recovery timeline for the operation is expected to be around two months. With the Panthers' season opener slated for September 29, the tight window makes it highly unlikely that the veteran winger will be ready for opening night.

After playing through a lower-body injury for much of the winter—including a stint representing Team Canada at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics—the veteran was eventually shut down in early March and placed on LTIR, missing the final 19 games of the regular season.

Despite the missed time, Marchand remained one of Florida's most dangerous offensive threats, tallying 54 points (27 goals, 27 assists) in just 52 games.
