The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially named former NHL forward Patrick O’Sullivan as their new Director of NHL Development. The promotion, announced by the club on Sunday, represents the latest move in a broader front-office revamp under General Manager John Chayka.

O’Sullivan, 41, steps into the expanded role after serving as a development coach with the organization since the 2023-24 season. Rather than an external hire, this is a significant internal promotion that rewards his highly successful, hands-on work with the Maple Leafs' roster over the past three years.
During his tenure as a development coach, O’Sullivan became an invaluable resource for Toronto’s veteran core, focusing heavily on technical skill refinement, video analysis, and individualized biomechanics.
His most visible impact has come through his sustained work with center John Tavares. The two share a relationship that dates back over two decades to O’Sullivan’s record-setting junior hockey days with the Mississauga IceDogs. His influence extends throughout the lineup. Max Domi recently called O’Sullivan "probably the best development coach in the league," praising his video breakdowns and on-ice reps for improving his neutral-zone decision-making. Even Auston Matthews has utilized optional gameday skill sessions with O’Sullivan to maintain his elite shooting mechanics during congested stretches of the schedule.
A Toronto native, O'Sullivan brings a wealth of playing experience to his new title. Originally drafted 56th overall in 2003, he played 334 career NHL games before transitioning into broadcasting and, eventually, player development.
