On Tuesday afternoon, General Manager Brad Treliving announced a major restructuring of the club's coaching staff, headlined by the hiring of Ottawa Senators franchise icon Daniel Alfredsson as the team's new associate coach.
Alfredsson steps behind the Toronto bench under head coach Jim Hiller as part of a three-man hiring class that also includes assistant coaches John Gruden and Brad Werenka. The massive bench overhaul follows the official departures of assistant coaches Derek Lalonde and Mike Van Ryn.

“I’m incredibly excited to add Daniel, John and Brad to our coaching staff,” Hiller said in a statement released by the Leafs. “Daniel’s experience, leadership and understanding of the game speak for themselves. John has established himself as one of the top coaches in the American Hockey League and played an instrumental role in leading the Marlies to a Calder Cup championship last season. Brad brings a unique combination of NHL experience, player development and expertise in performance analytics. Together, they’ll be outstanding additions to our team.”
Alfredsson had spent the past three seasons on the Senators’ coaching staff as an assistant coach, as well as a development coach in the 2023-24 season.
While Alfredsson now transitions into a vital tactical role behind the bench, he remains best known to modern hockey fans for his legendary 18-year playing career, where he served as the definitive face of the Ottawa Senators and the chief antagonist to Toronto's postseason aspirations.
Alfredsson's stellar NHL journey began with a bang, capturing the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie in 1996. Over the course of 17 seasons in Ottawa and one final campaign with the Detroit Red Wings, the Hockey Hall of Fame forward amassed an incredible 444 goals and 713 assists for 1,157 points in 1,246 regular-season games.
