On Wednesday, the New York Rangers announced the acquisition of veteran defenseman Marcus Pettersson from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a conditional 2030 first-round pick.
The future first-round selection heading to Vancouver is top-10 protected. By completing the deal, the Rangers absorb Pettersson’s $5.5 million average annual value (AAV), securing a premier shutdown defender for their top-four rotation.

Pettersson is in just the second year of a six-year contract at a cap hit of $5.5 million. He’s coming off his lowest point total in a full season with three goals and 15 assists for 18 points in 82 games,
Crucially, the move serves as a high-profile reunion. Pettersson played parts of seven seasons under current Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan in Pittsburgh, where he developed into a heavily trusted piece of Sullivan's defensive system. The head coach is intimately familiar with Pettersson’s game, meaning his integration into New York’s locker room should be seamless.
The Rangers have been active this summer, as they also acquired Pavel Dorofeyev, Sean Durzi and Joonas Korpisalo via trades, dealt Vincent Trocheck and potentially Will Borgen, and signed Oliver Bjorkstrand and Joe Veleno in free agency.
