On Monday, the Montreal Canadiens officially traded veteran winger Brendan Gallagher to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for future considerations.

To facilitate the emotional trade and do right by their long-tenured alternate captain, the Canadiens are retaining 50 percent of Gallagher's remaining salary in the final year of his contract.

Gallagher, 34, collected seven goals and 23 points in 77 games with the Canadiens during the 2025-26 regular season.

Drafted in the fifth round (147th overall) in 2010, Gallagher defied the odds to become the heart and soul of the franchise. Over 911 career games in Montreal, the 34-year-old registered 246 goals and 487 points, endearing himself to the Bell Centre faithful with his fearless, crash-the-crease style of play.

He helped propel the Canadiens to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final and was instrumental in their recent run to the 2026 Eastern Conference Final, despite seeing his ice time diminish down the stretch. On locker clean-out day earlier this month, Gallagher acknowledged his time in Montreal was likely over, paving the way for General Manager Kent Hughes to find him a fitting landing spot.

Through 911 career NHL games over 14 seasons with the Canadiens, Gallagher has collected 246 goals and 487 points. He’s added 14 goals and 34 points in 79 career playoff contests.
