On Tuesday morning, Vegas Golden Knights General Manager Kelly McCrimmon announced that the club will not be removing the "interim" tag from Tortorella's title, and the veteran bench boss will not return as head coach for the 2026-27 season.
“We thank Torts for the guidance he provided our team since joining the organization in March,” McCrimmon said via the team’s press release. “When the decision was made to bring Torts to Vegas, we needed an immediate impact to help us at a pivotal point in the season. Torts’ experience and leadership proved to be the boost that we were looking for, helping guide us to the Stanley Cup Final. We are grateful for Torts’ passion, sincerity, and commitment to our organization, and we wish him and his family the best.”

Tortorella was brought in under stunning circumstances in late March, taking the reins after the sudden dismissal of Bruce Cassidy. At the time, the Golden Knights were reeling, struggling to maintain their playoff positioning amidst a slide in form.
The impact of Tortorella's arrival was immediate and profound. He instilled a relentless, shot-blocking, defense-first identity that instantly stabilized the locker room. Under his watch, Vegas closed out the regular season on a dominant 7-0-1 tear, securing their ticket to the postseason.
That momentum carried right into the playoffs, where Tortorella guided the Golden Knights all the way to the 2026 Stanley Cup Final. Though they ultimately fell to the Carolina Hurricanes in six games.
