The NHL community is in mourning following the tragic news that former forward Kyle Calder has passed away at the age of 47.

The NHL Alumni Association confirmed his passing on Tuesday morning. He leaves behind a legacy defined by his relentless work ethic, a 10-year professional career, and a deep devotion to mentoring the next generation of players.

"Our NHL Alumni family is deeply saddened by the passing of Kyle Calder," the NHL Alumni Association said in a statement. "Kyle embodied the values that make our alumni family so special: his loyalty, toughness, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to those around him. He was tough as nails on the ice, a fierce competitor who never backed down, yet behind that grit was a teddy bear heart."

A native of Mannville, Alberta, Calder carved out an impressive 10-season career at the highest level of the sport. After a standout junior hockey career with the WHL's Regina Pats and Kamloops Blazers, he was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fifth round of the 1997 NHL Draft. Calder broke into the league and ultimately played 590 regular-season games, spending the majority of his career with the Blackhawks while also suiting up for the Philadelphia Flyers, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, and Anaheim Ducks. Known for his responsible two-way play and gritty determination, he amassed 114 goals and 180 assists for 294 career points.

Beyond his playing days, Calder remained deeply connected to the sport he loved. He transitioned into coaching, most recently working with the Los Angeles Jr. Kings program from 2020 to 2022, where he focused on developing young athletes both on and off the ice.
