The National Hockey League and the Professional Hockey Writers Association announced today that the Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman has been awarded the 2026 James Norris Memorial Trophy, presented annually to the defenseman who demonstrates the greatest all-around ability at the position.
Werenski beat out Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin and the Colorado Avalanche’s Cale Makar for the honor this year. He’s also the first player from the Blue Jackets to win the Norris.
Werenski racked up 22 goals and 59 assists for 81 points in 75 games. He led all NHL defensemen with 59 even-strength points (18 goals, 41 assists). He finished second in the NHL in average time on ice, logging a gruelling 26:37 per night.
Zach Werenski thought this was just a regular family BBQ, but he was in for quite a surprise! 🎉

The victory represents a historic milestone for both the player and the city of Columbus, as Werenski becomes the first Blue Jacket in the organization's 25-year history to take home the prestigious award. With the win, the Grosse Pointe, Michigan native also joins an elite fraternity as just the sixth American-born defenseman to win the Norris, alongside Rod Langway, Chris Chelios, Brian Leetch, Adam Fox, and Quinn Hughes.
The Norris Trophy caps off what has been a gilded calendar year for the defenseman. In February, Werenski anchored the blueline for Team USA, helping guide the Americans to a gold medal at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics
