Vancouver Canucks fire GM Patrik Allvin (featured)

In the wake of a franchise-crippling campaign Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford announced Friday that General Manager Patrik Allvin has been relieved of his duties.

The decision comes less than 24 hours after the Canucks’ season ended with a humiliating 6-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, leaving Vancouver with a dismal 25-49-8 record for 58 points, the third-worst points percentage in the team's 56-year history.

Hired in January 2022 as the first Swedish-born GM in NHL history, Allvin oversaw a period of aggressive, often controversial, roster surgery. While his tenure peaked with a 2023-24 Pacific Division title and a second-round playoff appearance, the following two seasons were defined by high-stakes gambles that failed to pay off which saw J.T. Miller and Quinn Hughes among the players shipped out.

Allvin got his start in the NHL as an European scout for the Montreal Canadiens from 2002-06. He joined the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2006-07, helping to build a team that would go on to win three Stanley Cups. Allvin would become Vancouver’s 12th GM in franchise history, replacing Jim Rutherford (like he did in Pittsburgh) after Rutherford’s near-two-month run as acting GM.
