The Columbus Blue Jackets announced Monday that they have signed defenseman Boston Buckberger to a two-year, entry-level contract.

The signing comes just 48 hours after Buckberger helped lead the University of Denver to the 2026 NCAA National Championship in Las Vegas. The 22-year-old blueliner was a vital part of the Pioneers' defensive corps, recording an assist on the game-winning goal in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Wisconsin.

Buckberger, a native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was one of the most sought-after college free agents this spring. Despite going undrafted, his consistent growth over three seasons at Denver made him a commodity for NHL teams. In 42 games this season, Buckberger tallied 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points. Last season, he put up nine goals and 21 assists for 30 points in 41 games. In the the 2023-24 season, his first with Denver, he notched five goals and 22 assists for 27 points in 44 games.

While his contract officially kicks off next season, Buckberger is expected to join the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters on an Amateur Tryout Agreement (ATO) for the remainder of their 2025-26 campaign and potential Calder Cup playoff run.

Standing 6-foot-0 and weighing 190 pounds, Buckberger is noted for his hockey IQ and mobility. He attended the Blue Jackets' development camp in the summer of 2025 as an invitee, where he clearly left a lasting impression on the scouting staff.

Prior to his time with the Pioneers, Buckberger spent the 2022-23 season with the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he registered nine goals and 36 assists for 45 points in 62 games. Buckberger played the 2021-22 season for the Brooks Bandits in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), where he posted 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points in 59 games.
