With a clinical 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames at Ball Arena on Thursday night, the Colorado Avalanche secured the 2025-26 Presidents’ Trophy.
This marks the fourth time in franchise history (including their years as the Quebec Nordiques) that Colorado has finished atop the league standings. By locking up the trophy with four games to spare, the Avalanche have secured home-ice advantage for the entirety of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

It’s been a big run for Colorado this season, as the group got off to one of the best starts in NHL history. On New Year’s Day, they owned a 30-2-7 record, setting them up for a chance to push for the 2022-23 Boston Bruins’ record for points in the standings with 135.
The Avalanche clinched both the Central Division title and the top seed in the Western Conference earlier this week, meaning they’re already guaranteed to play whichever team claims the second wild card spot in the West.
Head coach Jared Bednar is expected to use the final four games of the season for "load management," ensuring stars like Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen are rested while allowing defenseman Cale Makar extra time to recover from his upper-body injury before the quest for the Cup begins on April 20.
