The Calgary Flames have signed prospect Abram Wiebe to a two-year, entry-level contract.
Wiebe joins the Flames organization directly from the University of North Dakota (UND) following the conclusion of his junior season. The Mission, B.C. native is expected to report to Calgary immediately and could make his NHL debut during the team’s final four games of the regular season.
Frank Seravalli on X: "As we await word on Michael Hage and #GoHabsGo, some #CawlidgeHockey fallout: > Expecting free agent Jake Livanavage to sign with #LetsGoPens > Abram Wiebe is turning pro and likely to burn the first year with #Flames > #LGRW Dylan James is expected to join AHL Grand Rapids." / X
A seventh-round selection (209th overall) by Vegas in 2022, Wiebe’s rights were acquired by Calgary in January as a key component of the blockbuster trade that sent Rasmus Andersson to the Golden Knights.
Since the trade, the 6-foot-3, 209-pound rearguard has only seen his stock rise, emerging as one of the most reliable defenders in the NCHC. In 40 games with the Fighting Hawks this season, Wiebe recorded a career-high 29 points (5G-24A) and a +13 rating, earning Second-Team All-NCHC honors.
Flames management has lauded Wiebe for his "pro-style" approach and leadership qualities. "Abram is a big, mobile defenseman who plays a very mature, 200-foot game," said Craig Conroy. "He’s shown consistent growth every year at North Dakota, and we believe his size and puck-moving ability will translate well to the pro level."
