The New York Islanders announced that they have fired head coach Patrick Roy on Sunday, and immediately named veteran bench boss Peter DeBoer as his replacement.

The move, orchestrated by first-year General Manager Mathieu Darche, comes with only four games remaining in the Islanders' regular season.

New York has lost four in a row and seven of their last 10 games, being outscored 37–26 in that span. The Islanders currently sit third in the Metropolitan Division, but lead the Philadelphia Flyers and Columbus Blue Jackets by just one point while both chasing teams hold games in hand.

Roy leaves with a 97-78-22 record over parts of three seasons. While he famously sparked a run to the 2024 playoffs,

DeBoer has taken two different teams (New Jersey Devils and San Jose Sharks) to the Stanley Cup Final and, most recently, led the Dallas Stars to three consecutive Western Conference Final appearances (2023–2025). He ranks sixth among active coaches in both games coached (1,261) and wins (662). DeBoer most recently served as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina.
