The Detroit Red Wings officially signed goaltending prospect Trey Augustine to a three-year, entry-level contract on Tuesday.
The deal, which begins with the 2026–27 season, marks the professional transition for the South Lyon, Michigan native following a decorated three-year career at Michigan State University.
Augustine will report to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins on an amateur tryout (ATO) for the remainder of the 2025–26 season.

The signing comes just a few days after Augustine and the Michigan State Spartans were shockingly knocked out of the NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament. The Spartans, ranked third in the country, were eliminated by Wisconsin in the Worcester Regional Final on Saturday.
Augustine put together a 4–9–1 record, a .929 save percentage, and a 2.11 GAA in 34 appearances. He was named a 2026 Hobey Baker Award finalist and the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year for the second consecutive season. Over his three seasons (2023–2026), he compiled a 66–25–7 record with nine shutouts, helping MSU capture three straight Big Ten regular-season titles.
Selected by Detroit in the second round (41st overall) in 2023, Augustine has been a cornerstone of USA Hockey’s recent international success. He backstopped Team USA to back-to-back gold medals at the 2024 and 2025 World Junior Championships. He is the winningest goaltender in Team USA World Junior history with 11 career wins, surpassing the previous record held by Jack Campbell.
