On Tuesday morning, the Dallas Stars announced that they have signed General Manager Jim Nill to a two-year contract extension.

The extension keeps the 67-year-old executive at the helm through the 2027–28 season. Nill was in the final year of a previous two-year deal and was slated to become a free agent this summer.

Nill has won the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award in each of the last three seasons (2023, 2024, 2025), becoming the first GM in league history to win the award three times.

Since taking over in April 2013, Nill has earned a reputation for bold roster management. Last season, he traded Logan Stankoven and picks to Carolina for superstart Mikko Rantanen, whom he immediately signed to an eight-year, $96 million extension. He also acquired both Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverly from the Boston Bruins just a few months on the job, while adding notable veterans such as Jason Spezza and Patrick Sharp to help add experience in the mid-2010s. He is credited with building the team's core through the draft, landing cornerstones like Jason Robertson, Jake Oettinger, and Wyatt Johnston.

Stars Owner and Governor Tom Gaglardi praised Nill’s vision in a statement released Tuesday morning, "Jim has established himself as one of the most respected general managers in the NHL. Through his roster management and talent evaluation, he has positioned our franchise to be amongst the best teams in our League in both the present and future".

Currently, the Stars (44-18-12) hold the second-best record in the NHL, eight points back of the Colorado Avalanche.
