The Calgary Flames have signed center prospect Jonathan Castagna to a three-year, entry-level contract, the club announced Monday afternoon.
According to the Flames, Castagna’s entry-level contract will take effect with the 2026-27 season. The Toronto product is currently day-to-day with a lower-body injury and will report to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers on an amateur tryout deal for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

Castagna was not originally a Flames draft pick. He was a central component of the blockbuster trade on March 4, 2026, that sent defenseman MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth. The 20-year-old Toronto native departs Cornell University following a dominant junior season where he emerged as one of the premier two-way forces in college hockey. He led the Cornell Big Red with 15 goals and 34 points in 34 games as a junior during the 2025-26 season. Castagna was named the ECAC Hockey Best Defensive Forward for 2025–26. The former St. Andrew’s College standout racked up 31 goals and 74 points in 101 games over his three years at Cornell.
At 6-foot-2 and 195 lbs, Castagna is described by scouts as a "culture-setter" who plays a heavy, north-south game. "Jonny represents everything we want in a Cornell player," said Big Red head coach Casey Jones. "He had a fantastic year and should be ready for the next step".
Castagna's signing continues a busy spring for Flames GM Craig Conroy, who also recently inked Calgary native Tyson Gross out of St. Cloud State as the organization aggressively pivots toward a younger core.
