International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) President Luc Tardif announced Sunday that he will not seek re-election when his current term expires later this year.
Tardif, who has led the federation since September 2021, will remain in his post until the completion of his mandate in October 2026.
"With the IIHF in a strong and stable position, I feel it is the right time to pass the puck to a younger leader," Tardif said in a statement. "After much deliberation, I have made the decision not to seek re-election as IIHF President, as I believe that it is time for a new leader to take the reins and continue to move our sport forward. I am taking the opportunity to announce this today as I want to ensure that our organization and future leaders prepare themselves for the road ahead. And I am committed to ensuring a smooth and effective transition for the benefit of the global ice hockey community."

Tardif’s presidency has been defined by navigating the sport through a period of post-pandemic recovery and major geopolitical shifts. He played a pivotal role in securing the return of NHL players to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina. Tardif oversaw the safe staging of international tournaments under strict health protocols during the tail end of the COVID-19 pandemic and managed the federation’s response to the ongoing suspension of Russia and Belarus from international competition.
"I am incredibly proud to have been a guardian of our sport, our events, our organization, and our values, safeguarding them during these critical and uncertain times. However, none of this would have been possible without your trust, your collaboration, and your unwavering support. For that, I truly thank you." Tardif said in a statement.
Tardif will oversee the upcoming Men's and Women's World Championships this spring. Tardif also remains involved in the early preparations for the 2030 Winter Olympic Games.
