On Thursday night versus the Utah Mammoth, Washington Captials forward Alex Ovechkin notched his 34th hat trick of his career, surpassing Brett Hull for the fourth-most three-goal performances in an NHL career.

Ovechkin now trails only three players, Mike Bossy, Mario Lemiuex and Wayne Gretzky who holds the record at 50 three-goal performances. The Utah Mammoth became the 21st different NHL team Ovechkin has scored a hat trick against. Ovechkin became just the third player in NHL history to record multiple hat tricks in a single season at age 40 or older, joining Gordie Howe (1968-69) and Johnny Bucyk (1975-76).
This latest achievement follows another monumental milestone earlier this week. On Sunday, March 22, against the Colorado Avalanche, Ovechkin scored his 1,000th career goal (combined regular season and playoffs), becoming only the second player to reach that mark after Gretzky.
Ovechkin has posted 1,679 points in 1,564 games. He’s won the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award three times, the Art Ross Trophy, the Calder Trophy, the Conn Smythe Trophy, and the Rocket Richard Trophy a record nine times.
The Capitals (36-28-9) are sixth in the Metropolitan Division, six points back of the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
