The Tampa Bay Lightning announced on Wednesday that captain Victor Hedman is taking a temporary leave of absence from the team for personal reasons.

“No further details will be shared,” the Lightning said in a statement. “The team asks that his privacy be respected at this time.”

Hedman has been limited to just 33 games this season due to multiple ailments, including an undisclosed injury in November and an elbow surgery in December that sidelined him for 22 games. He last appeared in a game on March 19 against the Vancouver Canucks but exited after playing less than five minutes due to what the team initially labelled an illness. He subsequently missed the Lightning's last three contests. Hedman has tallied 17 points (1G, 16A) in 33 games.

The Lightning (44-21-5) currently sit in second place in the Atlantic Division with 93 points, trailing the Buffalo Sabres by two points for the top spot.
