Team Canada secured a 5-1 victory over Switzerland on Friday at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics. The win moves Canada to 2-0 and secures the top spot in Group A.
Meanwhile, Switzerland forward Kevin Fiala was stretchered off the ice after suffering a leg injury in the third period.
The atmosphere inside the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena shifted late in the third period following a collision between Switzerland’s Kevin Fiala and Canada’s Tom Wilson.

While pursuing a puck along the boards, the two players became entangled. Fiala’s left skate appeared to catch an edge or the base of the boards, causing a gruesome-looking leg injury.
As medical staff rushed onto the ice with a stretcher, the game paused for several minutes. The entire Canadian bench stood and joined the Swiss players in tapping their sticks against the boards as Fiala was carefully loaded and wheeled off the ice.
Fiala is an alternate captain for Switzerland. The loss is devastating for a Swiss team that relies heavily on his offensive production, as well as for the Los Angeles Kings, who are currently in the thick of a playoff race back in the NHL.
Switzerland also lost forward Denis Malgin and defenseman Andrea Glauser to injuries. Malgin’s injury must have occurred early on in the game, as he played just 2:28 of ice time across five shifts in the game. Glauser’s injury appeared to occur early on in Friday’s game, as he only played 5:31 of ice time across eight shifts on a top pairing with Roman Josi.
